Sak Yant at The Siam
5/21/2015,
Sak Yant is an ancient form of tattooing that emerged in Cambodia over 2000 years ago, and is now prevalent in Laos, Thailand and Burma. Traditionally performed by Buddhist monks, the process involves manually poking the ink into the skin using a large needle (either bamboo or metal) that is split in two at the tip.
The process is heavily imbued with religious and spiritual significance, and the Yantra tattoos are said to bestow mystical powers, protection and good luck. Normally performed at temples such as Wat Bang Phra, around 50km outside of Bangkok, guests of The Siam will now have the chance to be tattooed by the foremost Sak Yant master in Thailand – Arjan Noo Kanpai.
Trained by the master monk who was the Abbot of Wat Bang Phra, Arjan Noo Kanpai is the most sought-after tattoo practitioner of Yantra. General Manager of The Siam, Jason Friedman, has created a studio exclusively for him at The Siam where he can practice his traditional art in the serenity of the Hotel, so that guests can have their tattoos done in the comfort and hygiene of The Siam’s Opium Spa.
